# FAQ: BRP Registration for Renters in the Netherlands

Clear answers about BRP registration, the four-month threshold, the five-day timing rule, RNI and the BSN for renters in the Netherlands.

## Short version

BRP registration records a person and their address in the Dutch Personal Records Database. The general rule is to register as a resident when you will live in the Netherlands for longer than **four months**, and to register within **five days** of arrival. A shorter stay can fit the RNI path in the relevant circumstances. The municipality decides which record and evidence fit your situation.

## What is BRP registration?

BRP registration is the municipality’s record of a person’s personal details and address. The [Dutch BRP explanation](https://www.government.nl/themes/government-and-democracy/personal-data/personal-records-database-brp) covers residents and non-residents, including people who have a temporary relationship with the Netherlands.

For a renter, the record connects a real place of residence with a municipality. It does not replace a rental contract, confirm that an advert is genuine or decide whether a provider accepts an application.

## When does the four-month threshold matter?

If you expect to live in the Netherlands for more than four months, the general resident-registration rule applies. The period describes your expected stay, not the length of one viewing or the number of nights already spent in a property.

If you will stay for four months or less, RNI registration may fit the situation. The [RNI registration conditions](https://www.netherlandsworldwide.nl/non-residents-records-database/register) explain who can register as a non-resident and which desks handle the appointment.

### Does four months mean that every rental needs BRP registration?

The threshold helps classify the stay. It does not give a renter a right to register at an address that is not their actual home, and it does not remove a municipality’s request for proof. Match the length of the stay to the address and the evidence before treating the threshold as settled.

## When does the five-day rule apply?

The general guidance says that someone moving to the Netherlands for longer than four months should register within five days of arrival. That timing concerns municipal registration after arrival. It does not mean that every application, appointment or document review finishes within five days.

Record three dates separately: the day you arrive, the day you can occupy the home and the day the rental agreement starts. If those dates do not line up, ask the municipality which facts it needs for your case.

### Can a landlord register me?

The municipality maintains the BRP. A landlord or agent can give information about the address or confirm an occupancy arrangement, while the renter remains responsible for arranging their own municipal registration. A sentence in an advert saying “registration possible” deserves an address check before payment.

## What is the BSN’s role?

After a relevant registration, the municipality provides a **burgerservicenummer**, or BSN. Government services use the number to connect a person to official administration. The number does not prove that a rental address is legal, that a provider owns the home or that a contract is safe.

The BRP definition for renters keeps the record, the address and the BSN distinct. That separation helps when an advert treats “BSN available” as a promise about the home.

### Can I get a BSN through RNI?

Yes, RNI registration can provide a BSN for a person who qualifies as a non-resident. That number answers an administrative question. It does not turn a short stay into resident registration or approve a private rental arrangement.

## Which documents can the municipality ask for?

The answer depends on the person, address and municipal process. A municipality may need identity evidence, information about the address and documents that explain the registration situation. The provider’s rental-application list answers a different question. The documents for a rental application help you stage the housing file without treating every document as municipal evidence.

Keep copies safe and send only what the responsible organisation requests. Do not give a landlord your DigiD login, and do not assume that a BSN request makes every document request proportionate.

## Questions renters ask next

### Is BRP the same as a rental contract?

No. BRP is a public registration record. The rental contract sets the private terms between the parties. Read the address, start date and registration wording together.

### Is RNI a second name for resident registration?

No. RNI is the non-resident part of the registration system. It is used for different stay situations and does not give the same address record as resident registration.

### Does BRP registration guarantee a rental home?

No. Registration and rental approval are separate decisions. A home still needs a clear agreement, a known counterparty and a payment plan that matches the written terms.

### What should I ask when the wording is vague?

Ask which address will be recorded, which date starts the stay, whether the offer expects resident registration or RNI and which authority confirms the position. Put the answers next to the offer before you compare it with another rental option.

## Next step

If BRP, RNI or BSN appears in a rental offer without a clear address and date, write down the missing fact before you pay or send documents. For a question about that wording, contact us through the form without including personal documents.
