# Documents to rent a home in the Netherlands

Prepare a safer rental application by learning which identity, income, employment and registration documents landlords may request.

## Prepare the documents a rental application may need

Common requests can include identity, income, employment, household and registration information. The exact set depends on the landlord, agent, property and application process. The [document guide](/en/guides/documents-to-rent-a-home-in-the-netherlands/) separates a viewing from a formal application.

## Build a relevant application file

Prepare a private source folder and a separate redacted copy for applications. Keep identity, income, employment, residence and correspondence in separate sections. Cover a BSN and unrelated personal data when the stated purpose does not need them.

Use a confirmed portal or email address. Record the property, recipient, date and documents sent. Ask how long the files are kept and who can see them. Never provide online banking credentials.

## Check the request before sending

Ask why the document is needed, whether a narrower document is enough and whether the request applies to every comparable applicant. The [landlord application guide](/en/guides/landlord-rental-application-documents/) explains how identity, income, household and registration questions can be connected to a transparent process.

If a listing adds pressure, changes its payment details or refuses to explain the property, pause. Use the [rental scam guide](/en/guides/rental-scams-in-the-netherlands/) for address, identity and payment checks.

Pair the file with the [rental basics](/en/rental-basics/), [rental cost guide](/en/renting-costs/) and [contract reading guide](/en/guides/how-to-read-a-rental-contract/) before you apply.
